RTPS Unit III resumes power generation

Last Updated 27 October 2011, 18:27 IST

However, power production was affected as the unit tripped twice on Thursday afternoon. But it resumed functioning in the evening, RTPS sources said.

Except for Units I and II - which have stopped power generation due to technical problems - all other units are functioning. Unit VIII, with an installed capacity of 250 MW, started functioning on Tuesday and generated 200 MW.

No problems were reported so far, the sources said. Five railway rakes of coal was supplied to RTPS from Singareni, Talcher and West Coal Mine in Maharashtra. As much as 1.10 lakh metric tonnes of coal have been stored to meet the power demand, they said.

Despite Unit III resuming generation, Thursday’s output was 100 MW less than Wednesday’s production of 1,000 MW.

Situation improves
At present, the power generation stands at 900 MW to 1000 MW, which is just 60 per cent of the total capacity. But it is much better now, compared to a few weeks ago.

Though the supply of coal has improved, the technical problems continue to plague the units with one or the other reporting problems everyday, sources said. A lot of time is lost in repair works.
