CPM to limit leadership terms

Last Updated 13 November 2011, 19:39 IST

The implementation of proposal means changing general secretary, state and district secretaries at frequent intervals. No secretary would be allowed to continue after completing three terms.

“This is being proposed to bring in new leadership and strengthen collective leadership. This is to induct new leadership time to time,” said CPM general secretary Prakash Karat.
The provision will hardly affect current leadership as it would not have any retrospective effect. “This will be done with prospective effect,” he said.

In fact, Karat has mooted out the idea of limiting terms of leadership. He is competing his second term. Earlier, general secretaries, including Harkishan Singh Surjeet, the predecessor of Karat, had enjoyed more than four terms.

However, the Central Committee could not reach consensus on the changes the party is supposed to make in its ideological articulation. The party did not adopt the draft prepared by the Politburo. Karat said more discussion was required.

“The Central Committee discussed the draft of discussed a draft of the ideological resolution presented by the Polit Bureau. The next meeting of the Central Committee will finalise and adopt the draft ideological resolution,” he said.
