Now, there are members of various organisations and even political leaders expressing support to the protesting sericulturists.

Artiste Hasigala Ramesh organised a round of Harikathe through the night, to show his support. Others brought food, drink, light mattresses and mosquito repellants too for the protesters.

Effigy procession
In Veerapura and Boodala villages, however, farmers carried an effigy of Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on the streets, protesting against the duty-free policy of the government.

Legislator K P Bachegowda, Karnataka Milk Federation director K V Nagaraj, former vice-president of the Taluk Panchayat K R Reddy, PLD Bank vice-chairman Venkataram and JD(S) district unit president M Rajanna were among those who expressed support to the silk growers.

Proposal in session
Accepting the memorandum of the protesters, Bachegowda said the problem of the sericulturists would be put forth in the next session of the legislature. He said he would also talk to the Sericulture Minister.

“I am surprised that the people of the district have to suffer so, although there are at least two Union ministers representing them,” he added.

Farmer leaders Yaluvahalli Sonnegowda, Sonnenahalli Narayanaswamy, Bhaktarahalli Byregowda, Mallur Harish, Hittalahalli Suresh, Bhavanthappa, D V Narayanaswamy and Y Venkatappa and Kumudendu Maharshi Kannada Youth Organisation members Anand, Venkatapathi, Venkataraju, Manjunath, Muniraju, Umesh, Ravi and Nagaraju participated in the protest.
