The proposal to voluntarily offer a pay cut came from Congress president Sonia Gandhi at a meeting of the CWC. The salary cut will come into effect next month.
This is seen as an attempt by the Congress to offset the political cost of the drought ahead of the assembly polls in Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh and possibly Haryana.
