Tainted leaders return

The three BSP leaders, including sacked ministers Ashok Dohare, Avadhpal Singh Yadav and  “mafia don” turned MP Dhananjay Singh, were “welcomed back” into the party fold by her on Sunday at a meeting of the party legislators and members of Parliament.

BSP sources here said that many more MLAs and sacked ministers were likely to be brought back by the chief minister in the days to come.

Mayawati claimed that the sacked ministers were being allowed to return only after they had “accepted their mistakes.” The party insiders, however, say that the BSP supremo was “compelled” by the “poll equations” to take the step. “It is not in the nature of Mayawati to welcome those who had openly criticised her,” quipped a BSP leader. Dohare, a dalit leader and water resources minister, was fired when he found to have been involved in corrupt practices by the Lokayukta.

According to another BSP leaders the “brewing rebellion” within the party has forced Mayawati to take strong steps. “A large number of sitting MLAs have been denied re-nomination. Several MLAs have been arrested on different charges. Many of the sacked ministers are sulking,” he pointed out.
