Women richer than men in DK, Udupi, says report

The Karnataka Household Asset Survey (KHAS) report 2010-11 by Bangalore Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Centre for Public Policy (CPP) reveals that the agriculture land possessed by women in this part of the state is 16 per cent when compared to the nine per cent in the state.

The study shows that the principal residence in urban areas are owned by women in DK and Udupi area is 27 per cent while the state percent is only 17.

In other districts, there is a huge difference in the percentage of sharing of family property, while in DK and Udupi, it is almost equal.

The study exposed that in all most all aspects, including ownership of land, residence, vehicle, mobile phone etc, men took a considerable lead over the women.

In respect of jewellery, 53 percent of women own ornaments in state to a 21 per cent of men, and when it reaches to Dakshina Kannada  and Udupi, it increased to 68 percentage. In the case of small and large agricultural tools ownership, the disparity in percentage between men and women is meager. 

The study report was presented by CPP resource person J Y Suchitra during the Legal Literacy workshop conducted at Prajna Counseling Centre, here in the City on Wednesday.
 Apart from India, the study was also conducted in Ecuador and Ghana. The study was financed by the Kingdom of The Netherlands Foreign affairs ministry.

The legal literacy workshop was led by Advocate Soumya Bhat. Prajna Counseling Centre Director Dr Hilda Rayappan was also present during the programme.
