On a stop-start opening day of the Ranji Trophy match between Karnataka and Saurashtra, a big rodent not only caused a brief stoppage in play but also provided some entertainment which was at a premium, apart from Robin Uthappa’s sparkling half-century, here at the Chinnaswamy stadium on a muggy Tuesday.

The day’s play had begun two and half hours behind schedule due to damp ground conditions and the players and officials were keen to get on with the game when the rodent strayed on to the turf, holding up the game for a fair few minutes. After the players attempted unsuccessfully to chase the unwanted guest off the field, two of the ground staff, armed with a gunny bag, tried to catch the rat which managed to hoodwink them for some time.

One of the boys became a bit too adventurous and got too close to the rat, which bit his hand. Writhing in pain, the boy ran for first aid even as his partner in the mission managed to trap the intruder.
