Hundreds of protesters, led by Shapooru Gram Panchayat vice president Neelamma, members Venkatamuniyappa and Nagappa, members of Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), Raitha Sangha and Janavadi Mahila Sanghatane, staged a dharna in front of the Gram Panchayat on Wednesday.

They alleged that the residents of Agrahara Somarasanahalli, Yaranghatta and Nandamballi have been facing acute shortage of drinking water in the past three-four months. The authorities have not taken any steps to address the crisis, which has become severe since the past two years, they complained.

Another grouse that the villagers had against the officers was over delay in allotting sites, even months after submitting the applications.

They also complained that the workers have not been paid their wages for the work taken up under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme.

The protest was withdrawn only after they got the assurance that the issues would be discussed at a meeting with the Panchayat leaders at 11 am on December 8.

Janavadi Mahila Sanghatana district unit secretary V Geeta, DYFI district unit secretary M Vijayakrishna, DYFI leaders A V Ramesh, Subramani, farmers’ leaders Hollamballi Venkateshappa, Appayyanna, Tippasandra Gopal, G Anjanamma and Nagappa led the protest.
