The sources, speaking on condition of strict anonymity, said Gandhi's vehicle and escort were caught in the huge traffic snarl outside the Delhi airport after the city traffic was thrown completely out of gear by the late evening gale and torrential rains.

Rahul took the Metro to reach as close as possible to his 10 Janpath home after he returned to the Capital from Raipur after a two-day visit to Chattisgarh, according to a security official.

Rahul covered a substantial part of his journey home by the Metro train.

Realising he could get stuck on the road for hours - which most of Delhi commuters did Friday evening - Gandhi's car was turned towards Dwarka sub city from where he took the Metro to Connaught Place, taking those in the train by surprise.

After alighting at the Connaught Place metro station, Gandhi took another car that was waiting for him to reach home.

Traffic on all arterial roads in the capital went haywire for several hours after the heavy rains and hundreds of vehicles remained stuck for varying durations in the snarls.
