Although the details of the meeting were not known, sources said Rahul apprised Nadwi of the Centre’s reported move to provide reservation to Muslims belonging to the backward category within the reservation for the Other Backward Castes.

The Congress general secretary also met students at the seminary. Rahul’s visit to the seminary assumes significance as it comes barely a few months ahead of the Assembly polls in the state.

Addressing the party nominees here on Saturday, Rahul had told them that the Congress was committed to honour its promise to provide reservation to the “Muslim backwards” made in its election manifesto in 2009.

The Congress leader, who arrived here on a two-day visit on Saturday, met the Youth Congress office-bearers and the frontal organisations’ leaders and discussed the election strategy, according to party sources.

Rahul will be undertaking a five-day long “mass contact programme” in the western Uttar Pradesh districts from Monday.

During the tour, he will hold road shows and address meetings of party workers at different places. Rahul had undertaken a similar programme last month in the eastern and central districts in the state.
