Sensex up 388 pts

For a change, the market did not witness much of volatility and the breadth was strong on BSE with small and mid-cap stocks also participating in the rally. In fact, the broader indices outperformed the benchmark indices marginally in late trade, gained over 2.6 per cent.

The Sensex at BSE gained 387.92 points or 2.55 per cent to close at 15,628.75 points.  The bellwether index opened 122.10 points higher at 15,362.93, which was also its day’s low, and then advanced 435.52 points at the day’s high of 15,676.35 in mid-afternoon trade.

The S&P CNX Nifty at NSE rose 114 points or 2.52 per cent to settle at 4,642.80 in the day’s closing. Nifty August 2009 futures were at 4636, a discount of 6.80 points as compared to the spot closing.

Broader indices wise, the BSE Mid-Cap index was up 2.61 per cent and the BSE Small-Cap index 2.83 per cent, both outperforming the Sensex. The BSE clocked a turnover of Rs 4813 crore as compared with Rs 4,915.15 crore on Friday last. Turnover in NSE’s futures & options (F&O) segment was Rs 76,803.24 crore, lower than Rs 80,422.25 crore on the last day of last week.
