Warehouses gutted

Last Updated 15 January 2012, 19:10 IST

A major fire gutted garment worth several lakhs of rupees at two warehouses in central Delhi in the wee hours of Sunday.

The warehouses are near Chawri Bazaar Metro station. “We got a call at 1 am, after which we sent eight fire tenders to the spot” a fire official said.

The doors were closed. After the fire officials doused flames outside the warehouses, they  broke open the main door to extinguish more flames.

Turned into ashes
“It took almost two hours for us to control the fire. Everything in the warehouse turned into ashes,” he added.

No injuries were reported in the incident. The initial probe suggests the fire broke out due to short-circuit. Police, however, is still investigating.

A senior fire department official said warehouse owners must take precautions such as installing water pumps and follow building rules to avoid fire incidents.
