Child labour: 9-year-old girl rescued

Last Updated 27 August 2009, 19:20 IST

Acting on a tip-off about a minor being employed as domestic help, an NGO, Association for Promoting Social Action (APSA), rescued her from a house in Rajaji Nagar with the assistance of local police. The nine-year-old girl  (name withheld) had been working as a domestic help for the last one month at the house of a building contractor, Surya Prakash Reddy, said APSA director, Sheila Devaraj.

She had been brought by her uncle from Madinapalli village in Andhra Pradesh along with his 17-year-old daughter to work in Bangalore. “She toiled from morning to night swabbing the floor, washing clothes and vessels. However, she was fed properly,” the director said. The girl, who only speaks Telugu, expressed her wish to return to her native place. It is yet to be ascertained if her parents sent her here.

However, they were not able to remove the girl’s uncle’s daughter as she did not fall in the minor category. APSA is temporarily taking care of the girl and will approach the CWC on Friday.
