CBI to appeal Salem case in Portugal

Last Updated 17 January 2012, 20:14 IST

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has asserted that there would be no effect on the ongoing trial against underworld don Abu Salem in the wake of Portugal’s Supreme Court order, which scrapped his deportation saying that the rules have been breached on extradition.

The country’s premiere investigation agency has said that it will approach the Constitutional Court in Portugal to plead its case. Decisions of the Constitutional Court are above any other authority in European countries.

“The Portugal Supreme Court has upheld the decision of Court of Appeal, Lisbon, in which it had held that there has been a breach of Rule of Specialty in the matter of extradition of Abu Salem. There is expected to be no repercussion on status of Abu Salem and on the on-going trial against him,” CBI said in a statement released.

Speaking about the future course of action in the case, the CBI said that “the option of filing an appeal before the Constitutional Court in Portugal is available”.
