JOIN USFanfare marks 'Suttur Jathre'
The sight of a variety of colourful vegetables was the cynosure of attention on the inaugural day of the Krishi Mela-2012 being held here on the banks of the Kapila River as part of Shivarathri Shivayogigala Jathre on Thursday.
Crowds surged to get a view of the vegetables including ladies’ fingers, cabbage, cauliflower, red and orange-coloured capsicum, bottle gourd, tomato, cucumber and chilly grown in the town.
A variety of vegetable carvings of Jnanpith awardees such as Kuvempu and Shivaram Karanth were also included at the Krishi Mela. MLA Dinesh Gundurao inaugurated the event.
Science world
Another interesting attraction was the science exhibition comprising of projects made by students from several schools. Projects advocating the use of solar energy and others emphasising the importance of rockets in the role of communications were displayed at the expo.
Also models of the Taj Mahal and anatomy of the human body were also put up by students. Karnataka Youth Congress president Rizwan Harshad inaugurated the science expo. Visitors to the expo can also enjoy a boat ride on the Kapila River. MP Cheluvarayaswamy, former MLA Balaraju and deputy mayor Ravikumar inaugurated the boating rides.
Speaking on the occasion, NICE promoter Ashok Kheny said that government officials and politicians should take a look at the Krishi Mela being held at Suttur.
They have managed to grow a large number of vegetables on just one-acre of land. Everybody should try to follow the model used here, he added. MLA Dinesh Gundurao said that the country can’t develop without the growth of agriculture.
The government should announce schemes to encourage agriculture. As part of the cultural programmes, a group of women recited folk songs and brought forth traditional kitchen equipment.
