'Use tribal funds efficiently'

DC emphasises on using ` 10 crore for Jenukuruba welfare

About Rs 10 crore released for the development of traditional dwellers—Jenukuruba community in Kodagu district should be utilised effectively, said Deputy Commissioner Dr N V Prasad.

Speaking at a meeting to discuss over the implementation of programmes under funds released for the development of traditional dwellers by the government here on Wednesday, he said Action Plan has already been prepared for 2008-09 and 2009-10.

“As district receives heavy rainfall, it would be better to construct tile roof houses,” he said and urged the Integrated Tribal Development Project officials to prepare an Action Plan by increasing the amount to Rs 1.50 lakh for one house.

He said the authorities have received as many as 3,090 individual applications seeking sites for the tribals and title deeds for the land. As many as 1,531 applications have been considered as eligible for the title deeds, of which, title deeds have been issued to 807 families.

The Deputy Commissioner directed the officials to carry out the survey and distribute the title deeds for the beneficiaries at the earliest.

Zilla Panchayat member S N Rajarao said tribals have been residing inside the forest from time immemorial. It would be better if we give atleast four hectare land.

The DC said there is a need to give priority to the construction of road, underground drains, providing drinking water to the Jenukuruba haadi in Virajpet.

He said that 14 community halls can be constructed in tribal haadi in the district.

Additional DC K M Chandre Gowda said there is a need for coordination among revenue, forest and social welfare department while taking up the survey work.

ITDP coordinator Ganti, Member Sulochana, Social Welfare Officer Rajesh G Gowda and others were present.
