Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday urged the people to vote for the Congress party as it was the only party which he said did not make false promises and did what it promised.

Addressing an election meeting at Gorakhpur, about 275 km from here, amidst rains, Rahul said that when the Congress led UPA government was formed at the Centre, “we did not make a lot of promises”.

“We had made only one promise, and that was it’ll be a government for the people and we came out with schemes like MNREGS, which was for every one irrespective of their caste or religion’’, he said.

He ridiculed the `India Shining’ slogan of the NDA regime and said that the slogan had been taken from a TV advertisement and was a sham.

Later braving the rains, Rahul freely mingled with the crowds much to the discomfort of his security personnel. “You have come here despite the rains...I should also be with you'', he said and walked down towards the people and shook hands with them.

Rahul ridiculed SP supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav for promising free power. “Where will the power come from? From the sky?'', he sought to know.
