DC seeks information on bonded labourers

Employing persons without proper pay amounts to bonded labour

Deputy Commissioner Dr N V Prasad has appealed to the public to provide information on bonded labourers in estates in the district. 

Speaking at a district-level vigilance committee meeting he said that no bonded labourer case has been reported in Kodagu district but yet the district administration wants to be sure that human dignity of life is not violated in the district.

 “Bonded labour system is an evil system in the society. The public should join hands with the authorities in checking such an evil system in the society,” he said.

He informed that the government has chalked out various programmes to rehabilitate those who have been rescued as bonded labourers. “The government has been providing financial assistance to victims to take up self-employment,” he added. 

Superintendent of Police Manjunath Annigeri said that if the labourers are made to work without proper pay, then it would amount to bonded labour system. Additional DC K M Chandre Gowda said that the government has constituted a committee to look into bonded labour system. There is a need to create awareness in rural villages against bonded labour system. 

Zilla Panchayat CEO N Krishnappa, ZP deputy secretary Basavarajappa, Social Welfare officer Rajesh Gowda, Labour Welfare officer Yathiraj and others were present.
