As many as 95 child labourers have been rescued so far in Chamarajanagar district from restaurants, workshops and small shops.

Of the 95 children, 89 were rescued in a campaign by the Anti-Child Labour Andolana on Wednesday and six were rescued on Thursday night.

The volunteers, along with the police, rescued six children working with street vendors, scrap material dealers and at liquor stores. The children have been admitted to the child labour rehabilitation school run by the Adivasi and Rural Development Organisation in the APMC premises at Chamarajanagar.

Three of the rescued children were above 16 years and were handed over to their parents after verifying their age. They were admitted to regular schools on Friday. Despite the existence of Child Labour (Prohibition and Regulation) Act, 1986, the employment and exploitation of children is rampant in the district. Poverty and social circumstances are the prime reasons for it.
