Two arrested in Park Street rape case in Kolkata

The Kolkata police on Saturday arrested two men in connection with the gang rape of a woman inside a car at the posh Park Street in the city nearly 15 days ago.

“We have arrested two persons- Nishad Ali alias Auman Khan alias Tusi and Sumit Bajaj who were in the group but they have not committed the crime.

There were two other persons of whom one has raped the woman and we are looking out for them,” Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Damayanti Sen told reporters  on Saturday, confirming the rape and physical assault.

“According to our information there were four people in the group and this group is very much known to the group of Lovi Gidwani, Azhar and Sarafat. Nishad posed himself as Lovi Gidwani and approached the lady and others posed themselves as Azhar and Sarafat,” Sen said.

“The police got confused initially but the CCTV footage of the parking place of the hotel and the footage of the disco helped us to identify the culprits” she added. “Sumit Bajaj, whose father is a businessman, has a steel colour car which was used for the crime,” she further mentioned.

When pointed out that the woman had actually alleged five people were involved in the incident, Sen said: “At present we are getting four. After interrogation if we get the name of any person we will certainly arrest him”. The incident surfaced on February 9 when an Anglo-Indian woman lodged an FIR alleging that on February 4 night six persons picked her up in a car from posh Park Street area and raped her.
