The failure of the BJP government, difference of opinion and confusion within the party and the series of scams will help the Congress to score over the BJP in Udupi-Chikmagalur by-election, said Congress candidate Jayaprakash Hegde.

Speaking to mediapersons at the election campaign in the city on Friday, he said that the Congress will not be affected if the JD(S) fields its candidate in the election.

“I was new to the constituency in the last election, but situation is not the same now. Even after losing the election I have been with the people responding to their problems. The people will favour the Congress in this election and we would certainly win. If the public opinion gets converted as votes then the Congress would win with a huge margin,” he reassured.

He said that the reason for the Congress losing the last election was the lack of time for publicity purpose. But the situation is not the same any more.  Uncertainty has loomed large over the existence of the BJP government in the State. The people should analyse the work taken up by the last MP who was elected from this constituency and then exercise their franchise, he said.

“The Central government has given a special package for the coffee growers. Thousands of crores of loan of the framers have been waived under Vidarbha package. The facility has been made available for the farmers from this region too. Gorak Singh led committee has carried out a study of the farmers who have suffered due to yellow leaf disease. The committee, in its report has recommended for loan waiving and revival of the areca plantation,” he informed.

District Congress Committee President M L Moorthy said “We would not fear if the JD(S) fileds its candidate. We are quite confident of winning the election. We have urged the AICC Secretary Oscar Fernandes to have coalition with secular parties. The youth who have lost confidence with the BJP are volunatarily joining the Congress. They are angry over the BJP for disturbing communal harmony in Datta Peeta and playing vote bank politics. The voters will teach lesson to those who have disrupted communal harmony, in this election,” he stated.

Congress leader A N Mahesh, MLC Gayatri Shantegowda, Dr D L Vijay Kumar and others are present.
