JOIN USLess than a fortnight after Chennai police killed five people in an encounter, Tamil Nadu’s men in uniform have once again landed in a fresh controversy.
Four personnel of the nine-member team, which came to Murshidabad to investigate a robbery, were kept in safe custody at Farakka police station after a complaint that they were responsible for the killing of a person who was not involved in the crime.
The action was taken based on an FIR was lodged at Farakka Police station in the Murshidabad district by Mir Mukul and Aktar SK. According to the report, Bakul S K, 35, was killed by the Chennai police team when he had come to hand over clothes to Raju S K and two others – Ekrajul S K and Motibur S K.
The trio had been arrested by the Chennai police alleging their involvement in a Rs 25 crore robbery from a jewellery shop in the Trippur district in Tamil Nadu.
In the FIR the duo alleged that Bakul who is Raju’s brother-in-law came to Raju’s house, but during raids the police had picked him up and he had helped the police whole day.
At 2 am Bakul, along with of Raju’s relatives Mir Mukul and Aktar S K, went to Farakka police station to give him some clothes as the police, after taking a transit remand for the trio, were supposed to take Raju to Chennai.
“When we reached the police station the police were taking them to the railway station. We requested them to allow us to hand over the clothes to him but they refused. Instead four of them came and chased us,” Mir Mukul told Deccan Herald over phone.
“We managed to escape but they caught Bakul, beat him mercilessly and kicked him into the roadside drain. We were scared to go there to help him because they might catch us even,” Mukul said.
“After the police vehicle went away, we went there, only to find his dead body,” he said.
However the district police said Bakul fell into the drain when they were chased by the police which caused his death.
“The four police personnel, against whom the allegation are made, are kept in safe custody and the body has been sent for post mortem. Once the post-mortem report comes in we will be able to say the exact reason of his death” a senior district police officer said.
On February 23 five persons, all North Indians, were shot dead in an encounter for their alleged involvement in a bank robbery case.
