JOIN USA man suffered minor burns and property worth several lakh of rupees were destroyed when a fire broke out at a furniture showroom in Kirti Nagar area of west Delhi during the wee hours on Saturday, police said.
The injured, identified as Meherbaan works as a labourer at the showroom located at Mayapuri Chowk.
“Six others who were present inside the showroom escaped unhurt. Most of them were sleeping when the fire broke out at around 2:05 am,” a police official said.
A fire official added that around nine fire tenders and some water tankers were immediately rushed to the spot.
“A short circuit is believed to be the reason behind the fire. The large stock of raw wood and furniture caused the fire to spread quickly. The flames soon engulfed the second floor of the building and took a massive form,” the official said, adding that the fire was doused around 5 am, after three hours of fight. Meherbaan said, seven labourers, including him, were sleeping on the first floor of the showroom when the fire broke out.
“The flames and the smell of burning wood woke them up. They panicked and ran out of the building,” the police official said.
While others managed to escape unhurt, Meherbaan jumped on a burning piece of tin and injured his feet.
Police took him to a hospital, where he was discharged after first-aid. Investigation is on.
Fire in Paharganj.
In a separate incident, a fire broke out at a hotel in Paharganj area in central district on Saturday afternoon.
“We had received a call at around 3 pm that a fire had broken out at the terrace of Hotel New King. No one was injured in the incident,” a police official said.
Four fire tenders were rushed to the spot and the fire was brought under control by 4 pm.
A fire official said heavy generators were kept at the terrace which caught fire. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.
