College fests are something that every student looks forward to. In fact, some colleges are popular solely for their fests, especially the techno-cultural ones.

But while fun and merriment rule the campus throughout the event, one cannot ignore the effort and hard work that have gone behind the grand success of these fests.

The student organisers, coordinators and volunteers take an active part in making it a big success.

Other than participating in various events and showcasing their talents, the student fraternity learns a great deal at the end of each fest.

Metrolife interacts with a few students to understand how fests help them with personality development.

Most students say organising college fests is a rewarding experience. Sashank, a student of RV College of Engineering, says, “When it comes to organising fests, most of the work is done by the students. Holding a fest is rewarding — provided everything runs according to plan.”

He also informs that the organisers are responsible for everything, right from finding sponsors to getting people to come for the fest.

“The work starts after forming a committee, comprising student representatives and faculty members. Team work begins here, and one can learn about leadership qualities and managerial skills. Various problems and hurdles emerge in the process and we learn to tackle them effectively,” he adds.

Preksha Sethia, a commerce student in Maharani Lakshmi Ammanni College for Women, feels that organising an event  can improve one’s self-confidence.

“We had our departmental fest, ‘Envision’, which was a learning experience for me. I am a shy girl and was scared to speak to strangers. After organising this fest, my confidence level has increased considerably. Now, I have become an extrovert,” shares Preksha.

She adds that there is a lot to learn from other fests as well.

“I was part of Tarangini and Janapada Mela held at our college, which helped me visualise how to conduct a fest in a smooth manner. I had attended a fest hosted by Vijaya College which was well-organised too. They included new events and the topics were good. It urged us to make our fest bigger and better this time,” she explains.

Avinash S Ahuja, the student president of Sindhi College, opines that fests provide a bigger platform to explore one’s skills.

“Being an organiser, one meets ten people and learns a hundred things from them. One sharpens one’s communication skills. I developed my leadership qualities and doubled my contacts while conducting our annual fest ‘Cresindo 2012’,” he says.
He opines that fests allow one to weigh one’s strengths and weaknesses.

“You can analyse where you stand in the competitive world and how to succeed in life. You can even learn humanitarian values and improve decision-making skills. Lastly, one will get recognition on campus, which always keeps one’s spirit high,” concludes Avinash.
