Not long ago, students used to be told to take up engineering or medicine as these courses had campus placements and “assured” them a job. But that’s not the case anymore.

With more and more students pursuing degree courses, companies are heading towards degree colleges as well offering the students many opportunities that were earlier available only to those pursuing technical or professional courses.

Now that it’s time to graduate and start a new chapter in life, Metrolife speaks to a few final year degree students to find out about their placements and future plans.

Krity Nandan Chanda, a student of BCA at M S Ramaiah College of Arts, Science and Commerce (MSRCASC), got placed in two prestigious companies for a good
package.

“I got a job in Manhattan Associates, a supply chain company and IGate. I have opted for Manhattan Associates as the package is better. It was a pool campus interview and I had to go to National College, Basavanagudi, for it,” he says. “The first round consisted of logical, quantitative and grammatical questions while the second round was held at the office in Whitefield.

It’s an R&D job and they checked our basic knowledge of Java, C++ and C. They also checked the project that we did in our fifth semester,” he adds.

Krity agrees that degree students have a lot more scope nowadays. “But it’s upto you to prove yourself. No company is going to come to you and offer you a nice package. It’s upto you to show them that you are the best,” he advises.

A final year arts student at St Joseph’s College of Arts and Science, Mobin has attended as many as four campus interviews, some of which he even got through.

“Though my plan is to do post graduation in economics, I attended these sessions to gain knowledge,” he informs. “As compared to last year, many more companies have come this year for campus recruitment. I think the scope will increase as time goes by,” he adds.

Purushuttam Tiwary, a BCom student of Jain College preparing for CAT entrance, agrees. “When I first came to Bangalore, the placements weren’t so good for degree students. But now, many MNCs are coming to recruit us and are even paying a good amount. A friend of mine got placed in TCS, Hyderabad for a great package,” he notes.

Mumtaz, the placement officer at MSRCASC, agrees that the scope has indeed increased for degree students. “Over the years, many degree graduates have been placed in a number of prestigious companies,” she says.

“Many students in our college have been placed in well-known companies with a great salary package. Nowadays, these students can also work and pursue higher studies as companies like Wipro and TCS offer courses like MBA,” she adds.
