Spouses serving jail term soon can live in same prison: UP min

Married couples, serving terms in separate prisons of Uttar Pradesh, would be able to live in same jail, state minister for jails Raghuraj Pratap Singh has said.

"Husband and wife both lodged in different jails in any criminal matters in UP will live together in jail," said Singh, better known as Raja Bhaiyya, yesterday.

There is no harm in undertrials and convicted criminals living with their spouses in jail, said the cabinet minister.

The minister said the government will soon issue directions in this regard.

Singh was on a visit to Dasna jail here.

He said each district will have a jail soon to reduce the burden of undertrials, as the number of inmates in all the prisons are more than double or triple of their capacity.

Three undertrials, Sohan Viri, Khatoon and Suman lodged in Dasna prison met the minister and appealed that since their husbands were lodged in Agra jail they should be given permission to meet them.

Singh said that soon a decision in this regard would be taken.
