Three persons were arrested for committing number of robberies in south Delhi in the last six months by using Chinese toy pistols and chilli powder, police said on Monday.

A Lancer car purchased from the robbed money was recovered from them. The fourth accused, who is the kingpin, is still at large.

Bunty Kumar, 20, his cousin Deepak Kumar, 20 and Ajay Kumar, 24, were arrested from Saket Metro station last week, said a senior police officer.

Kingpin Sunil Kumar, cousin of Bunty and Deepak, is absconding. They have carried out around 30 snatchings and robberies in Saket, Malviya Nagar, Safdarjung Enclave and Vasant Vihar in the last few months, the officer said.

Bunty, who also works as a Gramin Seva driver, told police that he got involved in this because he was in dire need of money. His mother is a tuberculosis patient and his earnings were not enough for the medical expenses.

Sunil, who has been previously involved in cases of robbery and snatching, roped in Bunty and Deepak by alluring them with quick and easy money.

Their modus operandi included targeting women and people who traveled alone in isolated places at night.

They either snatched away gold chains on motorcycles or robbed people at knife or ‘toy’ gun point.

“Earlier this year, the gang threw chilli powder on the face of a man and robbed Rs 1.25 lakh in cash,” said the officer.

They purchased a Lancer car and a television set with the money.
Residents of Sangam Vihar, Bunty and Deepak belong to Bulendshahar, Uttar Pradesh. Ajay Kumar, who belongs to Meerut, used to provide inputs about their targets, the officer added.

Brothers held for robbery

Three brothers were arrested for robbing people in the city, police said on Monday. They were involved in three cases of robberies in west Delhi.

Pankaj Singh, 27, Dharmender Singh, 22, and Sulender Singh, 19, who hail from Lakhimpur Kheri in UP and temporary residents staying in Uttam Nagar, were arrested from Pankha Road in Uttam Nagar around 9 am following a tip-off that they had returned from their native place to commit a crime, said additional commissioner of police (west) V Renganathan.

“Our team apprehended them when they came on a motorcyle near Pankha Road. A raid was also conducted in their native village and on their instance, the articles purchased with the robbed money were recovered,” said Renganathan.

Pankaj told police that he left his schooling in childhood. His family makes country-made liquor in Uttar Pradesh. “Pankaj also said being influenced by his brother-in-law Rahul’s life-style, who commits robberies with his accomplices in Delhi, Mumbai and Assam, he joined his gang,” said Renganathan.

Thereafter, Pankaj organised his own gang by recruiting his younger brothers Dharmender and Sulender and started robbing in the city. Pankaj also said he along with his brothers and others worked as delivery boys in different hotels in order to avoid arrest or suspicion.

They mainly targeted people who withdrew cash from banks. After robbing, they used to move to Lakhimpur Kheri for a short period to conceal their presence, added Renganathan.
