The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) gave a cheque for Rs three crore to Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research for treatment of the urban poor.
In 2011-12, as many as 250 heart surgeries were performed and 2,000 patients received treatment with funds sanctioned by the Palike, said Dr C N Manjunath.
The rise in population in urban areas is accompanied by a steep rise in heart diseases among people. In the 1960s, only two per cent of the population suffered from heart complications.
Moreover, the funds sanctioned by the Palike are used towards treating the urban poor, he added.
