Jail officials suspended

Last Updated 23 April 2012, 19:35 IST

Parappana Agrahara Central Prison Chief Superintendent T H Lakshminarayana and Assistant Superintendent Dr S Anita were suspended on Monday.

The decision was taken after a departmental inquiry found the duo guilty of releasing an undertrial without any supporting documents from the authorities.

The officials illegally released S M Masood,  wanted in many cases in Mumbai, New Delhi, Jaipur and Bangalore, under Conservation of Foreign Exchange and Prevention of Smuggling Activities Act (COFEPOSA). He was brought to the City in connection with a case. But on December 27, 2011, he was released by the jail authorities.

Masood’s lawyer had sought the release of his client as his judicial custody in connection with the Bangalore case had ended. But the letter carried no supporting documents of court orders or correspondence from the Prisons department. However, T H Lakshminarayana released Masood.
