Ashoka in Somwarpet

Home and transport minister R Ashoka promised to construct a KSRTC bus stand at an estimated cost of Rs one crore in Somwarpet.

Speaking after inspecting the land for the bus stand, he said hi-tech bus stands have been constructed at several places in the state. A sum of Rs 33 lakh has been released for Madikeri KSRTC bus stand to take up renovation of toilets. Similarly, Rs 80 lakh for Virajpet has also been released.

Kodagu district will get 44 new KSRTC buses. This includes Volvo, and other luxury buses, he added.

On coastal security

At another event, R Ashoka said four new coastal security police stations will be set up to keep a watch on the coast and to check intrusion of terrorists through sea.

After inaugurating the newly-constructed police station at Somwarpet on Monday, he said communal violence and other illegal activities have come down drastically in the state.

“About 30 new fire service stations with modern technology will be set up in the state in the next three years. Home Guards will be strengthened. The honorarium paid for home guards will be increased. Police constables will be given additional one pair of uniforms,” he said.
Naxal package

Ashoka said the public should cooperate with the police to check crime. The law and order situation in the state is good. The government is committed to modernise the police department. The police should behave well with the public.

Later, addressing a press meet, the minister said: “The police have started combing operation against Maoists in Western Ghats. Naxal surrender package has been announced to motivate
Maoists to join the mainstream. If they continue to take law into their hands, we will initiate legal action against them.”

He said “the government has called upon the Maoists to lead a dignified life by surrendering. The state government is keen on ending Naxal violence. If they continue with the gun, the government will also use gun against them.”

MLA M P Appacchu Ranjan urged the minister to sanction funds for the construction of KSRTC bus stand at Somwarpet and Kushalnagar.

Zilla panchayat vice-president H M Kaveri, taluk panchayat president V K Lokesh, IGP (southern range) A N S Murthy, SP Manjunath Annigeri were present.
