Death that'll be soon forgotten

Missing slab covering drain claims a life; whose fault is it, anyway?
Last Updated 24 April 2012, 18:13 IST

The fact that Indresh, a youth who eked out his living by doing masonry jobs, died after slipping into a drain on a rainy Monday night hardly matters.

Reason, the youth didn’t even make it to middle class with his economic background, forget upper class or a class that can influence decisions. If he was, he would be riding a bike or driving a car on that night. That he was walking home, on a road without streetlights, which is way too slushy to walk, was his fault that cut short his life.

So much so that, his death didn’t even cause a flinch among officers, or elected representatives. Who will compensate for the life that was lost owing to a missing slab on the pavement? No clue yet.

When Deccan Herald contacted Mysore city corporation commissioner Raykar, he said works in the area were not carried out by MCC. Further, the area corporator Somashekhar said he was to broach the issue of ‘possibility of such accidents’ with the commissioner on Monday evening and that he would meet the officer soon.

“Some officers told me this person who died, didn’t die an accidental death, and that he was murdered and body was put into the drain. This is what the postmortem report says. I am still verifying the details,” he said, amidst ambiguity on whether or not the civic body would compensate for the death of Indersh.

There is also one version which claims Indresh was drunk when he was walking home. But then, one look at these slabs, it’s enough to understand even a sombre person can fall to death in these, and that drunk or no drunk is a non-issue.

Residents of the area have often complained about streetlights not working and the area being way too dreary owing to this, especially to commute in the night. However, the corporator says he is in discussion with the authorities concerned. “The streetlights are very much there. Only some work owing to less voltage of power supply during some hours.” Well said Mr Corporator, so when do they work?

During the day when it’s bright and sunny?

Slips to death
