With the aim to improve the occupancy rate at the automated multi-level parking in Sarojini Nagar, the developers DLF will also manage the surface parking in the market now.

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) officials said the clause was part of the agreement signed between the developers and the civic body.

“DLF has agreed to manage the surface parking in the market which was part of the initial agreement. The unified management of parking in the market would help in optimising the occupancy at the parking facility,” said Amit Prasad, director (PR).

Initially, the DLF was not very keen on taking over the responsibility fearing resistance from the local traders of the market.

However, under pressure from officials the real estate giant has now agreed to this condition as the parking facility has invited a lot of negative publicity due to technical glitches and the resultant spillover of vehicles on roads, adding to the traffic chaos in the market.

“DLF will have to put proper signages and car-marking at designated surface parking lots. They will also have to ensure that no parking takes place in the non-parking areas.

These steps coupled with the proposed hike in the surface parking rates would help in increasing occupancy at South Square,” an NDMC official said.

The parking facility has come under fire from all quarters, especially due to the retrieval time of cars at the facility. The facility was also closed for three days barely a month after it was opened in December.

The automated parking lot has car lifts, pallets and computerised control systems. People use the parking by buying a ‘car park card’. They drive into the facility and leave the car at the basement, from where it is automatically taken to the parking area.
