A Delhi police constable shot dead his colleague inside a barracks at the Delhi Police Training College in Malviya Nagar in south Delhi, where they were both posted, on Monday, police said.

Accused Sunil Kumar and victim Dinesh Kumar Pandey, both in their twenties, were posted with the Seventh Battalion.

The incident was reported at 10.30 am when both were on duty.  Sunil shot Dinesh with a self loading rifle of another colleague. A bullet pierced through through the latter’s chest. The victim was rushed to hospital where he was declared brought dead.

A constable posted with the same battalion said: “Both Dinesh and Sunil were good friends. They used to eat and stay together. The killing may not be intentional.”

While investigation is on into the incident, police suspect personal enemity and dispute over a love affair to be the reason behind the crime.

Sunil has been placed under suspension and arrested.
Both hailed from Rajasthan - the victim from Bikaner and his killer from Jhunjhunu - and had joined the Delhi Police in 2010. In 2011 they were posted to the same batallion. Dinesh is survived by his parents and two siblings.

His cousin Ritu, a Ph.D student at IIT Delhi, said: “I received a call from police around 11.30 am that  my brother had been shot dead. My family in Bikaner has been informed and they will arrive in Delhi soon. An autopsy will be conducted after their arrival.”
