Sonia Gandhi's help sought to solve areca growers' problems


A delegation of District Youth Congress submitting memorandum to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi, recently.

District Youth Congress president Sachin Meega said that the delegation, which included about 50 party members, explained about several important problems faced by the people of the district. The problems of arecanut growers in Malenadu and other regions were brought to the notice of Sonia Gandhi on the occasion, he added.

A memorandum was submitted urging the government to find solution to farmers’ problems including crop diseases, rain havocs, loan burden and farmers’ suicide. Special emphasis was given to the grievances of arecanut growers in Sringeri, Koppa, N R Pura, Kalasa and Tharikere taluk, he said.

Demands including special packages for Yellow Leaf Disease and loan waiver for arecanut growers were submitted to Sonia Gandhi, Meega said. Former Union Minister Oscar Fernandes also had accompanied the delegation, he added.
