Police rescued a woman on Wednesday after she complained of torture by her husband and in-laws over dowry at G T B Enclave in north-east Delhi.

Manika Nagpal alleged that she was mercilessly beaten up by her in-laws and husband, who works in a media company, for past three months for dowry.

She works with a real estate company at Nodia.

“I don’t have a father and my mother has some property which my in-laws and husband are eyeing. They curse and beat me regularly for not getting adequate dowry like air-conditioner, sofa and a big car. Last night, they banged my head on a wall and threatened to kill me. So I called the police control room around 9:15 pm and two police officers came to my rescue,” she said on Thursaday.

She added that police had to break open the doors to get her out of the house as the family was beating her up constantly. Her husband Manoj Sachdeva was taken in custody at GTB Enclave police station on Wednesday night and released on bail on Thursday by a city court.

She alleged that her father-in-law Madan Sachdeva, branch marketing head of a media organisation in Delhi, had threatened her several times of dire consequences if she reported the torture to anyone.

“I was beaten up 15 days ago for staying at my mother’s place. But my family convinced me to return and adjust with the in-laws. Three days ago, when I was returning with my husband, he tried to strangle me to death in the car and I have cuts on my hand and bruises on my body,” she said.

For three months, she said, she kept quiet since she did not want to hurt her mother. She also alleged that she was forced to give her salary of approximately Rs 20,000 per month to her husband.

Manika met Manoj in August, 2010 when they were studying for an MBA in Delhi. It was a love marriage. According to Manika, Manoj had pleaded before her mother for the match.
