The construction industry should find solutions for their problems through alternative sources and hence build affordable houses, said Deputy Speaker of Legislative Assembly N Yogish Bhat after inaugurating ‘Mangalore Realty and Buildcon Expo’ organised at TMA Pai Hall in Mangalore on Saturday.

When shortage of sand is a major crisis affecting the building industry, one can solve the issue by using silt as an alternative. There is shortage of water in Lakhya dam due to the accumulation of silt. This silt can solve the water issue as well as the sand shortage problem, he said.

The government has kept aside Rs 647 crore for the labour welfare in the State. There is a need to build four crore houses in the country, he pointed out.

Chairman of the Mangalore Chapter of CREDAI (Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Association of India) P M A Razak said that the developers in the country may hold a strike in October if Government does not adhere to their demands.

“There is a delay in sanctioning projects in our country. This will lead to cost escalation. As far as 45 per cent of cost increase in caused due to the delay,” he said and added that the government should resolve the issue.

The government should also set up a regulatory authority to control the prices of steel and cement which is increasing day by day.

The CREDAI plans to meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in June to seek solutions to various problems that affects the construction industry. However, if the demands are not met, a strike is planned in October, he concluded.

Mangalore Realty and Buildcon Expo aims to be a one stop solution for the real estate needs of a customer.

There were 60 stalls exhibiting latest projects by the promoters and builders, banks giving details on various housing loan schemes, housing finance, interior decorators, cement companies, electrical fittings and accessories, furniture, modular kitchen companies and others.

“I am planning to purchase a flat and this expo is being really helpful as I can get details on various projects of different companies under one roof. This expo is a time-saver. One can easily find property which is suitable for oneself,” said Harini Shetty, a home maker from Mangalore.
