DU's Information Centre bombarded with admission calls

Last Updated 31 May 2012, 19:38 IST

The recently started Information Centre at Delhi University is flooded with admission-related calls. With the centre getting over 3,000 to 5,000 calls per day, more than 50 per cent of the enquiries are related to admissions which will start from June 4 onwards.

According to a member, the enquiry calls started coming just a month after the Central Board of Secondary Exam (CBSE) class 12 exams got over.

Most of the admission-related calls are about courses available in DU colleges, availability of seats and admission process for undergraduates in regular colleges.

“DU hasn't started the admission helplines yet. We started getting admission-related calls since May 15. One of the frequent course-related-queries is whether BA Economics (H) is open to non-Maths students,” said a member.

From this year, Maths has been made compulsory for Economics (H).

“A mother asked me when Economics is a Humanities subject then why should Maths be compulsory. We told her and others that Economics also works on calculation concepts,” said the member.

There are many queries regarding admission procedure for compartment cases, gap year and vocational courses.

“We are trying to guide them as they are not able to get much information from individual colleges. A lot of queries are pouring in about post graduate admissions procedure,” said the member, adding the enquiry mails have also doubled.

Minority institutions

Questions regarding admission process in minority institutions like St Stephen’s and Jesus and Mary College have also come in good numbers.

A huge number of callers

enquire about admission for Scheduled Castes (SC), Scheduled Tribes (ST) and Other Backward Classes (OBC) category. “The registration process for reserved category students, relaxation for SC/ST category students and castes listed in central university under SC/ST category are among the queries,” added the member.

Apart from this, calls regarding ongoing examinations of second and third year DU students are coming in plenty.

“One BA French language student asked about the date of French examination. She said the teacher does not know about it. Queries related to admit card, short-term summer courses and admission in School of Open Learning (SOL) are also coming quite often,” the member said.
