'Project human and cultural values'

Media should project human and cultural values with the use of latest technology. Syllabus to inculcate values of professionalism should be prepared for journalism students, said, retired head of Bangalore University’s journalism department, H S Ishwar.

He was speaking at the inauguration of audio-visual studio at the journalism department in the University of Mysore on Sunday.

Even though modern technology is available to media, news related to superstitions, astrology is given prominence. “Programmes needed for the betterment of society need to be aired on channels. Media needs to think of the impact of a story aired,” he added.

Bangalore Doordarshan director Mahesh Joshi said visual has immense potential and Doordarshan was giving importance to programmes related to education. “Programmes on information and entertainment should be considered only after giving priority to education,” he added.

ZEE Entertainment Enterprises Limited vice-president Gowtham Machaiah said several journalists are now on the payroll of politicians. “Corruption in journalism is not a good sign. Despite such situations several honest journalists are trying to maintain the standard of work,” he added.

He said his organisation was prepared to provide training programmes for lecturers as it would help the students.

Vice-chancellor V G Talwar, journalist Ravindra Bhat, journalism department chairman Maheshchandra Guru, N Usharani and Niranjan Vanalli were present.
