'Exploitation of Chalavadis continues'

Last Updated 04 June 2012, 19:10 IST

The members of Chalavadi community, who are honest and hardworking, have been deprived of their due social and economic standards in the society.

The members are still struggling to be part of the mainstream society, said former MLC D S Veeraiah.

He was speaking at the taluk-level Chalavadi conference organised at Nehru Stadium on Sunday. The Chalavadis who have been deprived of benefits extended by the government have also been aloof from the social justice, he added.

Dr B R Ambedkar who belonged to the community, strived for the welfare of the oppressed class. He always encouraged people to fight for their rights, he added.

In the absence of proper guidance, the community and other SC castes continued to be exploited to this day. We have failed to fulfill the dreams of Ambedkar, Veeraiah added.
Illiteracy, lack of unity and social consciousness have contributed to the community being ignorant of government benefits, he added.

Ambedkar is not just the leader of oppressed class but for every citizen as he gave the voting rights to every individual. It is our responsibility to fulfill his dream of establishing egalitarian society by following his principles and ideals, Veeraiah said. He called upon the youth to take the initiative.

Founder of the Chalavadi Mahasabha K Shivaram, who spoke on the occasion said that Mahasabha had been established for the development of the community. An opportunity will be given for the socio-economic-political development of the members. An attempt will also be made to give proper guidance, he added.
