Seven people were abducted Sunday by suspected Karbi Peoples' Liberation Tigers (KPLT) militants from an under-construction power project in Assam's Karbi Anglong district, police said.

The incident took place at Lungnit hydropower project in Manja police station area. The project is located about 22 km from Karbi Anglong district headquarters Diphu.

The abducted people included six labourers and an employee of P. Das & Co, a private firm engaged in developing the 8 MW hydropower project, police said.

Militants of banned KPLT are suspected to be behind the abduction, as the outfit had earlier demanded an amount of Rs. one crore as extortion from the power project.

The Lungnit hydropower project is one of the projects by the Assam Power Generation Corporation Ltd (APGCL), and both the stage-I and stage-II of the project are expected to be commissioned by the end of 2012.
