A 21-year-old collection agent has been arrested for making a false claim that Rs 1.16 lakh was robbed from him at Mianawali Nagar area of west Delhi on Monday.

According to V Renganathan, additional commissioner of police (west), the robbery was planned and executed by Nangloi-resident Harender Rana himself. “His associate and cousin Arun Solanki, a resident of Uttam Nagar, has also been arrested for involvement in the incident and the stolen money has been recovered,” he added.

Harender had approached police on Monday claiming that he was attacked when he was going to deposit his company Share Microfin’s money at a State Bank India branch at Paschim Vihar. The accused, who has been working for the company for the past three years, was riding his motorcycle.

“He claimed that when he reached near Nangloi at about 12.30 pm, three people intercepted him and threw stones on him. As he stopped, the attackers tried to snatch the bag containing cash. When he resisted, one of the robbers attacked him with a blade,” Renganathan said.

He falsely claimed that robbers inflicted multiple injuries on his hand and chest, and sped away after snatching the bag.

Suspicion arose as the injuries sustained by Harender didn’t corroborate the sequence and genuineness of the incident, Renganathan said. Subsequent opinion by forensic experts corroborated the injuries as self inflicted.

Later, on sustained interrogation, Harinder broke down and disclosed that he had planned the robbery along with Arun.

He was annoyed with his company as he was not get increment according to his expectations. He thought he could replicate robberies like this reported in the media, added Renganathan said.

He was of the opinion that collection agents work hard on the road to earn profit for the company but it does not pay the field boys their proper share in profit. Arun helped in the crme as he is a student and was in need of money.

According to plan, Harinder called Arun to Nangloi and handed over the bag with cash. Arun took the bag, while Harinder injured himself with a blade on his left hand, shoulder and left side of chest and ‘informed’ police of the ‘robbery’.
