Even as several works have been taken up on a warfooting to solve drinking water problems across the state, the situation has become serious in Nagamanagala taluk of Mandya district.
We get water once in two days from the town panchayat, and it is contaminated with algae and suspended particles and emanates foul smell for the past one month, complain residents.
Lake goes dry
Water level at Sollekere, from where water is supplied to the town, has depleted alarmingly, thanks to insufficient rainfall this year. Water that used to be channelised from Hemavathy canals too has stopped. Dead fish found on the edges of the lake prove the seriousness of the issue. Fast depleting water level has caused fear about the future among people.
However, elected representatives at the town panchayat have not taken any steps to solve the problem, residents complain. Their efforts to contact the MLA has proved futile as his phone number is either engaged or outside coverage area.
