Sirsi is 34th educational district

While the existing Uttara Kannada district is the largest educational district in the State in terms of educational blocks with a total of 11, there are other districts which are larger both in terms of area and student population.

Speaking to Deccan Herald, Principal Secretary of Primary and Secondary Education R G Nadadur said that the decision was in keeping with the government’s policy of splitting larger districts into small units.

“The new district will have a Deputy Director of Public Instruction (DDPI)  and Deputy Project co-ordinator for Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan,” Nadadur said.

He also revealed that a new syllabus which has been mooted for primary and secondary education is not likely to come into effect till 2011-12.

Primary and Secondary Education minister and district in-charge Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri incidentally hails from Sirsi, which after the division will have six blocks. And the existing Uttara Kannada district will supervise the remaining five blocks.

Venkatesh Manchakanur, Additional Commissioner of Public Instruction (Dharwad) said, “Karwar which is currently the DDPI headquarters is more than 130 km away from some remote areas like Siddapur, Yellapur and Mundgod. The decision was taken with a view for more efficient supervision in schools in these areas.” He added that the decision has been long over-due.
