Two unidentified armed robbers barged into a businessman’s house in Farsh Bazaar area of east Delhi on Friday afternoon and shot at his 14-year-old son when he tried to raise alarm.

The robbers also held the family of Manoj Tayal, who runs a factory in east Delhi, hostage and injured another 16-year-old boy while fleeing.  Sources said that they stayed at Manoj’s first floor house for nearly an hour.

According to a police official, two men had knocked at the main door at around 1:30 pm on Friday.
“Most of the family members, including Manoj’s wife, were sleeping inside at that time. The door was opened by Manoj’s eldest son Shaan. The men asked for Manoj, but when Shaan said that he was not in the house, they pushed him inside and barged into the house,” the official said.

One of them then held the whole family hostage at gunpoint, while the second robber started ransacking the house.  The robbers later opened fire at Manoj’s younger son Priyanshu when he screamed for help.

Shaan was shot at and beaten up when he came forward to help his brother. Amid the commotion, the robbers fled from the spot with cash and jewellery. Manoj’s wife then made a police control room call after which Priyanshu was rushed to Max Balaji Hospital.

“His condition is said to be critical,” the official added. According to Prabhakar, deputy commissioner of police (east), a case of robbery and attempt to murder has been lodged and investigation has been taken up.

“Various teams have been formed to trace the robbers. We hope to solve the case in the shortest span of time,” he said. Cops have taken statements of neighbours and are trying to prepare the sketch of robbers.

They have also asked Manoj to provide details of his domestic helps and factory’s employees.

“No one saw them coming so it is not clear whether they had come on motorcycle or car. But it appears to be a handiwork of someone who knows the owner as while knocking at the door, he asked for him,” another official said.
