DMK basks in Pranab's victory

A beleaguered DMK looking to politically pull itself out of a humiliating defeat in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections last year, was in an upbeat mood on Sunday after UPA nominee Pranab Mukherjee won the Presidential election on Sunday.

A visibly pleased DMK patriarch M Karunanidhi heartily congratulated Mukherjee over phone when the latter called on him from New Delhi to thank the DMK leader and his party for all the support they extended as the UPA’s key ally in Tamil Nadu.

On Mukherjee garnering more votes than expected by the UPA amid cross-voting from the NDA side in some states, Karunanidhi told reporters: “Pranab Mukherjee is a good democrat and able administrator; the results show the extent of faith electors have reposed in him.”

Karunanidhi hoped that this pattern of voting in favour of the UPA would repeat itself in the 2014 Lok Sabha polls. “It should reflect and I hope it does,” he said.
DMK Parliamentary party leader T R Baalu and other MPs will attend the swearing-in ceremony of the new President in Delhi on July 25, said Karunanidhi.
