If you are tired of eating burgers, pizzas and pastas and want a South Indian touch to your food, then ‘Southern Express’ is the place for you. Located on CMH Road, Indiranagar, this eatery has only South Indian dishes on its menu.

‘Southern Express’ has various dishes from all the four states of South India. Started by Sitaram Venugopal and his group of friends, this eatery has become popular among professionals and college students. “A lot of restaurants in Bangalore serve tandoori, Chinese and various other cuisines. So, we thought of opening a South Indian restaurant,” informs Venugopal, who is also the managing partner of the restaurant.

For starters, one has an array of options such as urulai pepper roast, masala yam roast, mutton pepper fry and karaikudi chops.

The restaurant also has something called the ‘Southern Express Special’, which has chilli potatoes, nethilli fish fry, ava’s red chicken, mutton chukka and mutton chops. The restaurant buzzes with professionals during lunch hours. “During this time, the chicken thali and mutton thali are in demand,” says Venugopal. ‘Southern Express’ also serves desserts such as payasam and gulab jamun on demand.

One can indulge in main course dishes such as fish curry, which is prepared in the Mangalorean and Madras style.  Other main course dishes include Andhra methi mutton, pepper mutton masala, Bangalore chicken kozhambu and Mangalore chicken kozhambu.

And do not think that the menu is dominated by the non-vegetarian dishes only — even vegetarians are provided with a wide range of options. One can try ulli theeyal, kadalai kozambu, poondu kozhambu, nilgiri khurma and kaai kari kozhambu.

Due to the demand of the regular diners, ‘Southern Express’ also serves different vegetarian and non-vegetarian rolls. These are very popular among college students and professionals.

The restaurant is also popular among the Bengali population in the City. “We get a lot of Bengali crowd. They usually go for the fish curries, fish thalis, or fish starters,” says Venugopal. During weekends, the restaurant is crowded with families, who normally go for the prawn and crab curries.

Among the soups, one of the most popular is the mutton paya soup. Other varieties in soups are drumstick soup, spicy green peas soup, pepper basam and chicken masala soup.

The restaurant has chefs from different states of South India. “All the chefs here are trained by P Murugan, one of the co-founders of the restaurant. Because of this, we prepare authentic South Indian food,” adds Venugopal.

‘Southern Express’ has the option of takeaway and home delivery. “60 per cent of our business is based on home delivery and takeaway,” informs Venugopal.

So, just hop into ‘Southern Express’ to taste a variety of authentic South Indian food under one roof.

‘Southern Express’ is located at 1A, 17 E Cross, 2nd Stage, CMH Road, Indiranagar. For home delivery or takeaway, call 08792005515.
