Antony reviews security in J&K

Defence minister A K Antony, who arrived here on a two-day visit on Saturday, discussed the prevailing security threat and law and order situation in Jammu and Kashmir with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah at a high level meeting.

Official sources said matters related to improving the synergy between various security agencies were discussed in the Unified Headquarters meeting which was attended by deputy chief minister, Tara Chand, minister of state for Home Nasir Aslam Wani, Army chief General Bikram Singh, top police officers and representatives of IB, RAW, CRPF, BSF besides Union Defence Secretary Shashi Kant Sharma.

Sources told Deccan Herald that killing of Hilal Ahmad Dar by Army in north Kashmir’s Bandipore forests on Tuesday evening and its aftermath was also discussed in the meeting.

“Other points in the meeting included the gradual withdrawal of controversial Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from comparatively calmer and safe places like Jammu, Srinagar, Budgam and Kathua,” sources added.
