Manjunath, Mohan rewrite meet records on opening day

Shreema sprinted home in 25.35 seconds to leave behind favourite Nirupama at the Chamundi Vihar stadium. Mysore Division’s Shreema, had comfortably beaten Nirupama earlier in the heats and in the final, she got off to a superb start. The 22-year-old maintained that advantage before Nirupama came up with a rapid burst of speed to catch up with her rival past the bend.

However, Shreema managed to nose ahead of the Bangalore Rural sprinter nearing the finish. “I usually run the 200 only in Dasara Games, so I rate it as a good win,” said Shreema, who won four gold medals at last year’s games. Nirupama took the silver in 25.69 and Bharani C Gowda of Bangalore Urban claimed the bronze in 26.28.

“I was short of practice as the Sree Kanteerava track is not yet ready. So I had to cut short my training to three sessions in SAI from my usual 12 sessions per week,” reasoned Nirupama. Two meet records were broken on the day. Manjunath M D clocked four minutes 01.54 seconds in the men’s 1500 metres to erase the mark of 4:01.60 set by by Harish S G last year.

M C Mohan Kumar set the other record in men’s shot put, achieving 15.83 metres. The 22-year-old first BA student of Basudeva Somani College in Mysore sent into oblivion the three-year-old record of 15.05 that stood in the name of Santosh H S of Bangalore Urban.

Arshad M, the State junior champion, claimed the men’s long jump gold medal with a leap of 7.02 metres, finishing ahead of Sukaraj of Belgaum.  Akshaya S B triumphed in the women’s long jump, kicking the sand at 5.58 metres to ppush Chandrawa V S to the second spot.

Bangalore Urban defeated Bangalore Rural 56-18 in the women’s basketball event  at the Chamundi Vihar stadium courts. In another women’s match, Belgaum defeated Gulbarga 38-10. In the men’s section, Belgaum defeated Bangalore Rural 84-50 while Gulbarga got the better of Mysore 69-62 in a closely-fought encounter. In handball, Mysore drubbed Gulbarga 34-10 while Bangalore Urban received a walkover from Belgaum.
