“Construction activity is going on unhindered in the prohibited areas... especially during night hours, flouting the Supreme Court orders,” Samajwadi Party spokesman Rajendra Chaudhary said.

The affidavit and undertaking given to the apex court were merely an eyewash, Chaudhary alleged adding that official machinery was being used as BSP agent. The senior SP leader stressed that it was essential that some kind of check be imposed on the state government to save the democratic and constitutional institutions. Congress spokesman Subodh Srivastava said that though Chief Minister Mayawati is heading a democratically elected government, she has no respect for the democratic institutions and is working in an arbitrary manner.

“Now, media has also shown that works were on at some of the sites, we hope that the court would again take suo motu cognisance of the same,” Srivastava said.  The Congress spokesman said it appears that Mayawati is purposely flouting the apex court directives to send a message among her followers and supporters that she was ready to even sacrifice her government for saving the memorials set up after Dalit icons like Ambedkar and Kanshi Ram.

“This kind of message is aimed at keeping her vote bank intact, which appears to be moving towards Congress as had been evident in the last Lok Sabha elections,” Srivasatava said.

BJP spokesman, Hriday Narain Dixit urged Governor, B L Joshi to take notice of this constitutional breakdown in the state and send a report to the Centre. “We know that since BSP is supporting the UPA government, it would not take notice of state government’s actions, but we hope the Governor would send an impartial report on the state of affairs prevailing,” Dixit added.
