The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has registered seven cases related to recent ethnic clashes in Assam, which left at least 77 people dead and more than four lakh homeless.

“The CBI has registered seven cases on August 10 relating to recent incidents of violence in certain places of Assam on the request of the government of Assam and after further issue of requisite notifications from government of India,” CBI spokesperson said here on Monday.

The cases which have now been taken over by the agency were earlier probed by Assam Police, the spokesperson said. With government ordering a CBI probe into the incidents of violence, where conspiracy seems to have been involved, the agency decided to investigate the cases after a two-member CBI team comprising its Special Director K Saleem Ali and Deputy Inspector General Satish Golcha visited the violence-hit area on Friday.

Spokesperson of country’s premiere investigating agency further informed that a team of investigators headed by a DIG is camping in Assam to conduct the investigations.

The central probe agency has registered cases related to four incidents of violence in Kokrajhar, two in Chirang and one in Dhubri, they said.
